Challenge

Prior to SignalFx, Mark43 used two monitoring tools, neither of which met the high standards it required for its customers. One of the tools had consistent stability issues and the other was prohibitively expensive without meeting all of Mark43’s monitoring needs. Across both tools, Mark43 also saw a lot of unnecessary alerting noise.

Having multiple tools also fragmented Mark43’s metrics, so engineers didn’t always know which platform to go to when there was a problem. This slowed time to resolution and ate up valuable development time.

Solution

SignalFx has allowed Mark43 to funnel all of its metrics into one platform, giving the team a single pane of glass for monitoring the health of its services in real-time.

Mark43 uses custom dashboards from SignalFx to give each of its development teams a tailored view of the metrics most relevant to them, so each can monitor and maintain their particular piece of the Mark43 platform.

SignalFx has also allowed Mark43 to fine tune its alerts and send them to the right team, based on which application or host the alert is coming from. Smarter alerting from SignalFx helps Mark43 ensure the right alert goes to the right person so they can immediately begin to remediate the issue.

SignalFx also provides Mark43 with monitoring for AWS GovCloud (US), an isolated AWS region used for highly-sensitive workloads that require increased regulatory and compliance requirements.

Results

Since Mark43 started using SignalFx, the team is alerted to issues in seconds compared to a 10-minute latency with its previous tools. This allows the team to get in and fix issues before they have a downstream effect for the officers using the platform.
