At SignalFx, we pride ourselves on our ability to let you create smarter, more timely alerts as efficiently as possible. Many of our customers take advantage of our analytics-backed detectors to alert on aggregate metrics (like service-level performance) instead of individual node failures. Others use dimensions to create a single detector across an entire fleet of VMs to alert on important conditions on a per-VM basis. Still other customers use dynamic thresholds instead of static ones, which allow them to keep the same detector in place through changes in load or through code pushes that change resource utilization profiles.

 

We’re happy to introduce a capability that many of you have asked for: the ability to create detectors and alerts via API. Detectors in larger environments often have many similarities, like the same analytics on the test signal, or the same thresholds for determining an issue’s severity. But these detectors often have just enough differences to prevent you from using a single detector, like a different value for the “environment” dimension or different notification policy.

To help you create new detectors efficiently, we’re introducing the concept of detector templates and APIs to programmatically instantiate new detectors from templates–so you can easily create detectors incorporating the best practices without repeated manual work.
